Apologies, Crough's Nest readers...it's been awhile since we've caught up with all the happenings in this fam. Today is Feb. 1st...another snow day for the Midwesterners in the bunch. Thought it might be a good opportunity to give a quick little update on the latest exciting happenings with the gang. (Plus, this might be my last post for awhile...Baby Kimmel is coming very soon!)

Miss Braely Martinez celebrated her 3rd birthday on January 13th. Here's what she's been up to, according to her mama:

"Braely...she's into babies (feeding them, taking them night-night), favorite movie is Shrek, started taking a dance class in January (ballet and tap). She loves doing shuffle step around the house! She loves to sing and will make up a song for every thing she is doing. For her bday we had a McDonalds b-day party with a Shrek cake! She got to invite her "friends." She asks daily when the new baby will be here and wants to name the baby "Baby H" because H is her favorite letter. She gets to share a room with the baby but that took some convincing - she told me the baby should sleep in my room because it's my baby not hers. The girl has a point!"

On January 14th, Serena Wilson also celebrated Birthday #3!

Here's a Serena update from Grandma Pam:

She had a fun 3rd Birthday. Celebrated with 8 little friends or so. (in that group were triplets that are 4) She told me they were matching girls!!!! Kari took a picture of the group and they made a picture frame out of beads and shells etc. Something of their own to take home. It was really neat. It was a cupcake Birthday Party. Serena had a huge one to bite into, that is after she blew out her 3 candles. She loves doing arts and crafts and grandma has glitter!!!!! She likes Tinker Bell all kinds of music including Lawrence Welk she sings the closing song (Good Night) by heart. Grandpa Tim taught it to her. The Music Man, Mary Poppins are some of her favorites movies.Loves the outdoors and right now all the snow. Favorite color she tells me is pink, but it really depends on what color she has on for the day. She loves her family. Easton is the best Big brother and right now is sporting a Mohawk which she said it looks good.

I woke up early this morning, made a cup of coffee, opened up the windows and decided to take a stab at making Grandma Faye's famous Banana Nut Bread.

She would have been 101 on Thursday—can you believe that?—so I thought I would try and channel some of her baking prowess by attempting one of her best-loved recipes.

I didn't make it exactly like Grandma would have. I used a microwave to soften the butter. I used my Kitchen-Aid to mix it all together. Plus, at 6:15 a.m. I'm sure she would have already been up for 2 hours and have moved on to other chores by then. But with the cool breeze blowing in the windows, the birds singing outside, a quiet house with Diggs and the dogs still snoozing, I couldn't help but wonder, "I bet this is the way Grandma Faye would have spent an early autumn morning."

The aroma of banana bread finally woke Diggs up. Although it was a little on the dry side (any ideas on why, Crough fam?) I was so proud of my morning accomplishment, I had to call Mom and let her know that her grandmother's legacy lives on...and smells delicious.

Cindy Shriver was feelin' fine with Birthday #59 on April 17th!

Mason Martinez, a.k.a. Muscle Man, celebrated his 4th birthday on April 18th!

And Mason's uncle, Quincy Crough, had 27 reasons to celebrate on April 19th.

Happy (and Totally Belated) 11th Birthday to Kelly Schmieder, daughter of Cara Bridget (White) and Jim. This picture was taken when Kelly was 10, so we'll get an updated one up ASAP and see how Kelly is rockin' age 11!

Miss Bridget Bergin celebrated her 18th birthday on April 27th.

She is also a recent graduate of Shawnee Mission East

and will be heading to St. Louis University in August!

May 17th meant Birthday #32 for Sheilah (Crough) Martinez .

And if you don't think birthdays are anything to celebrate, I'm sure Sheryl Maguire would beg to differ. At 58 (on June 10th), she can still teach a hula hoop a lesson or 2.

Why not soak up a few golden rays on your Golden Birthday?

Luke Ransopher turned 16 on June 16th.

(Anyone else care to join me in the disbelief that the littlest Crough cousin is 16 years old??!!)

And just over a week later, Luke's dad Milo also celebrated a birthday.

The question on everyone's mind: Did he have to eat Luke's leftover cake, or did he get a new one?

And on June 26th, Ryan "Digger" Kimmel was lucky enough to land the girl of his dreams in a little ceremony in the middle of Kansas.

Some said the bride was "radiant." But those who were there know she was really just radiating...with heat...from a chapel with a broken AC…on a 100º + day.

turned 26 on June 29th. Congrats Uncle Pat!!!

Happy Belated Birthday to Randy Crough, who celebrated on July 8th.

On July 11th, Matt Ransopher achieved the highest rank attainable within the Boy Scouts organization: he became an Eagle Scout!

July 23rd spelled BIRTHDAY for Jake Schmieder.

I am writing you today to tell you about an upcoming event that I am participating in that is both very important and very exciting to me. It is NAMIWalks for the Mind of America, NAMI’s signature walkathon event that is being held in Denver, CO at Sloans Lake on May 15, 2010.

As most of you know my youngest brother Quincy, has been battling his own mental illness for the last 8 years. Quincy has been in and out of hospitals (private and public), involved with the court system, and even homeless at times. I have learned from Quincy's experience that there is a need to raise awareness for mental illness in this country. Quincy deserves equal treatment and humane, quality care for his illness. Last year Quincy was diagnosed with Schizoaffective Disorder and is doing amazing with the help of medication and lots of hard work. I'm so proud of him and proud to be walking for Quincy!

Best Wishes to Mike Crough!

To say we were surprised by Mike Crough's news this week would be a huge understatement. Mike caught us all off guard by announcing that he is taking an opportunity to start his own business in Oklahoma. With mixed emotions we are preparing to say goodbye to a man that has made a huge imprint on Holm Automotive Center and the town of Abilene. We are first and foremost happy to see Mike and his wife so excited about this new opportunity. On the other hand there is an incomprehensible fear of not having him around to be our friend, mentor, and confidant.

Mike and his wife Merry have decided to purchase a convenience store and storage business in Tonkawa Oklahoma called the Quickie. They see this as a great opportunity to enrich a business with a great location by adding quality facilities and better service. While Mike has enjoyed his 26 years in the automotive industry he sees this as an opportunity and is excited to be doing something new. Tim Holm and the rest of us at Holm Auto are 100% behind Mike and wish him the best.

Saying goodbye to Mike will not be easy. His sense of humor and candor have been a welcome part of our team for the last 26 years. Mike started selling cars when he was a teenager. His dad, Jim Crough, a salesperson in Salina for many years, would trade for cars and Mike would turn around and sell them himself. So when Mike wanted to start as a full time salesperson in 1983 he was confidant enough to show Jeff Holm he could sell a vehicle that he had one sold before he was even technically hired. George Holm immediately recognized Mikes talent so it was in Abilene at the start of Holm Automotive's existence that he started his career. He has been here ever since and by our estimates Mike has sold as many as 4000 vehicles over the years.

Anyone who knows Mike understands his sense of humor. One story that has been told many times goes back many years to when the employees were first allowed to wear shorts on Saturdays during the summer. Part of the new understanding was that socks were to be more than ankle length. When Mike showed up for work that morning his socks were of course to short and so he was asked to go home and change. Although he took no offense, he still had to have fun and returned to work wearing a pair of red wool hunting socks that almost covered his knees. That is classic Crough!

Chances are that many of you reading this have been able to enjoy working with Mike. Holm Automotive is committed to making sure each all of Mike's customers get the same care he offered for so many years. Those of you wishing to see Mike before he heads to Oklahoma are invited to the dealership on December 22nd and 23rd from 2-5:30 PM for an open house.

All of the employees at Holm Automotive Center would like to express their gratitude to Mike for being a huge part of this dealership for so many years. Words can't describe how we will miss him. Over the years Mike has always been in charge of announcing each employees birthday or anniversary with the same line. So...its our turn this time, "Mike, thanks for all of your hard work and dedication!"
